GENRES

Exam Classes

We are proud to offer ballet, tap, jazz, musical theatre and contemporary classes from the British ballet Organisation, which was established in London in 1930, is one of two of the largest, prestigious and most influential dance education organisations in the world alongside RAD.

British Ballet Organisation teachers adhere to a carefully structured classical ballet syllabus which is both fun and safe for students. Teachers qualify with Registered Teacher Status only after rigorous training.  They are then required to continue to update skills and knowledge throughout their careers.

Rebecca, Laura and Gemma have qualified for BBO Registered teacher status and continue to meet the Continuing Professional Development requirements as Registered BBO teachers.

Term Structure

In Term 1, we create fun dances choreographed specifically for the Westport Performing Arts Competition, to extend students skills and give ALL students an opportunity to perform on the stage.

Terms 2 and 3 are in preparation for exams where there is careful concentration on technique for exams at the end of September. In addition, we also hold private lessons for those students wishing to compete in competitions throughout New Zealand.

In Term 4, we prepare newly choreographed dances for the large end of year show - extending on the exam work learnt throughout the year and again offering all students the opportunity to perform on the stage.

Classical Ballet

We are proud to offer BBO Classical Ballet according to one of the most prestigious syllabi throughout the Dance arena. Ballet is taught for boys and girls from pre-syllabus at age 2 up to Advanced 2 for those looking for careers in dance. Grade and vocational exams are also offered to those of all skills and ability.

Modern Jazz

The BBO Jazz syllabus offers style and an excellent technical base to develop students jazz dance skills. The syllabus incorporates other jazz styles such as Lyrical and Musical Theatre, improving strength, technique, flexibility and performance. Jazz classes are loved by many as fun, lively and fantastic fun that all students enjoy.

Contemporary

BBO Contemporary dance aims at teaching students how to understand and perform the concepts of contemporary movement such as weight, flow, momentum, and the use of gravity. Students enjoy a sense of dance while focusing on freedom of movement and spatial awareness.

Musical Theatre

BBO Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical e.g: – humor, love and anger – are communicated through the words, music, movement and dance and integrated whole. Our students love the musical theatre classes that not only require technique in dance, but give students an opportunity to express their emotions through dance.

Tap

BBO Tap teaches students the rhythmic requirements for excellent tap technique with fun routines and challenges from Primary up to Advanced level. Students love the challenge that BBO tap provides.

ACRO

Acro is a fun class based around learning Acrobatic technique with a combination of skills and tricks .

Classes are gymnastic based where students learn skills from forward rolls, cartwheels and leaps right up to handsprings, aerials and flips, while working on strength and flexibility.
With acrobatic moves becoming more common place in the dance world, these classes offer a great extension to all genres.
