Laura Griffin

Laura Griffin is a fully registered international BBO dance teacher and a Director of Gravity Dance Studio, where she teaches students from Tiny Tots (beginner ballet) through to adults. She leads a wide range of classes including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Acro, Musical Theatre, and Strength & Conditioning for children, as well as Adult Jazz, Tap, Partner Dance, and Barre.

Laura discovered her love for dance at just three years old, beginning her training with the beloved Beryl. Her early years were filled with creative exploration as she immersed herself in the performing arts—dancing, singing, acting, and competing in gymnastics across New Zealand.

In 2005, she began assisting Beryl with beginner classes, gradually stepping into a teaching role of her own. Laura quickly became known for her dynamic, imaginative choreography and her ability to connect with students. She specialises in contemporary, hip hop, and jazz.

In 2009, Laura moved to Christchurch to further her training, completing an extended certificate at Hagley Theatre Company in acting, musical theatre, film, and contemporary dance. She also trained in Advanced Ballet, Contemporary, and Hip Hop at Southern Ballet.

In 2011, Laura returned to Westport to help care for her niece and nephew, opening a small studio focused on contemporary and hip hop. She continued teaching throughout early motherhood and, in 2016, welcomed her first child, Leighton. That same year, she co-founded a local gymnastics club and served as head coach until stepping back in 2018 with the arrival of her second child, Daphné.

In 2019, Laura officially took over from her mentor Beryl and, alongside Rebecca, has proudly led Gravity Dance Studio ever since. She treasures the studio’s vibrant energy and values the privilege of guiding young dancers as they grow in skill, confidence, and self-expression.

Laura believes that dance is for everyone, and that every child deserves the chance to move, create, and shine. Her mission is to foster a supportive, inclusive environment where every student feels safe, inspired, and celebrated—just as they are.
